“The six of us like to get away every autumn for a good walking holiday. We’ve done a lot of walking in Snowdonia but never tackled the wooded eastern edge of the National Park. This walker’s haven has a staggering 11 lakes in the hills above the village of Trefriw. And our first trail explored two of the largest, Crafnant and Geirionydd.
On our second day we took the longer walk to Llyn Cowlyd, through the abandoned cottages and chapel of Ardda. We took in the stunning views across to Capel Curig with Moel Siabod in the distance. Trefriw has real village life, a warm welcome at the pub and once won the Calor North Wales Village of the Year competition. Our guest house was once a Victorian farmhouse and we loved the homely atmosphere. This was a stylish place with iron bedsteads, fresh white linen and beautiful views. A hearty Welsh breakfast and a packed lunch set us up nicely for the day’s walking. For evening meals we enjoyed Trefriw’s cosy pubs and the real ale went down a treat! There’s so much to do if you need a break from walking. We saw traditional Welsh textiles being made at Trefriw Woollen Mill, visited Trefriw Wells Spa and walked along the river to Gwydir Castle, the beautifully restored Tudor courtyard house.”
