These walks will bring you though a wooded river valley to the ruins of Ewloe Castle. This 13th century Welsh castle may have been an ambush castle during the frequent border disputes. Following the English invasion of 1277, when the castle was captured, it ceased to have any military use. The disused railway line was part of the Buckley and Connah's Quay Railway opened in 1862 at a cost of 100,000. It linked the Buckley brickworks with local pits and the port at Connah's Quay. Water was collected from springs at the Gathering Grounds – hence its name! It is now a nature reserve.
