Offa's Dyke Path from Chepstow in south Wales to Prestatyn in the north is a blister-earning 177 miles long all told.
It roughly follows 8th century Offa's Dyke - Britain's longest ancient monument. Which roughly follows the boundary between England and Wales. Tackle the whole thing and you'll cross the border more than 20 times, go through 8 different counties, three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. And be walking for about 2 weeks.
But don't worry, the northernmost section within the North Wales Borderlands - near Llangollen to Prestatyn - is just 40 miles in all. Sounds a bit easier doesn't it? And you can conquer this path in sections because the nice people at National Trails have divided it up into linear walks. There are circular routes that link up with Offa's Dyke Path, too: Offa's Dyke and Jubilee Tower, Offa's Dyke North, Offa's Dyke and Pentre Bychan.
North of the River Dee the path is routed right through the hills and moorland of the Vale of Clwyd - a 20 mile-long Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Very handy for The Gop - Britain's second largest artificial Neolithic mound. And for spotting thousands of wading birds and wildfowl on the mudflats of the Dee Estuary. After a hard hike the Path tops out on the summit of Moel Famau, the Vale's highest point. And here's the reward for all that hard work: knockout views east to Liverpool and west to Snowdonia, (look north and you can pick out Blackpool Tower on a clear day). Then it's downhill to sink tired feet into the sand on the blue flag beach at Prestatyn.
